Understanding your project

Our architect consultation process has been honed over the years, ensuring that we provide all the information you need to make the right decisions for your residential or commercial build. You’ll have the opportunity to ask us any questions and get a feel for the way we work, so you can see if we’re the right architects for you.

Initial architect consultation

Consultation is the key first step to any new build, extension or renovation project – and it all starts with an initial chat.

We like to keep this stage flexible and friendly, initially giving us the chance to get to know each other and finding out where you’re at with your ideas. We’re happy to provide an initial consultation over the phone or via a video call – whichever you prefer.

At this stage, we’ll ask you for an outline of your project, talk through your requirements and work out the next step.

If it’s a straightforward project and you already know what you want, we may be able to provide a quote straight away for your consideration. If you wish to go ahead, we’ll arrange to meet you at the property or site, gather more extensive details and measure up.

For more complex architectural projects, we’ll try to give you an indicative fee at this stage of the consultation process, before visiting the site in order to discuss details with you in more depth. We can then firm up our quote and arrange a further visit to take measurements if required.

These architect consultations are provided free of charge.

Not sure what you’re looking for?

If you want a more in-depth architect consultation to help you understand the possibilities and parameters of your project or site, or if you’re not sure what you want and need some ideas, no problem.

We understand that it’s a big decision and a big investment, so we’re here to help you get a full view of the process and help you to visualise a finished project that suits your lifestyle perfectly.

This slightly more involved consultation is charged at our current hourly rate, and usually only takes an hour or so to complete.

Preparing for your architect consultation

In order to get ready for your consultation with one of our experienced architects, we recommend making some notes regarding your ideas and requirements prior to our call/meeting.

The first thing is usually your budget. This will set the scene for what may be possible with your project. We’ll be able to advise if, for example, you can’t achieve a large extension because your available budget will only allow for an internal remodelling.

Secondly, we’ll need to know if this is a short or a long-term plan. Are you likely to want to sell in the near future, and therefore do we need to consider design elements that will be desirable to buyers? If you’re looking at a more long-term plan, what considerations do we need to make in terms of an expanding family, or comfortable living in your later years?

If your project is a commercial build, are you aiming to expand your business?

The other thing worth noting down is your key architectural objectives, which can usually be split into three categories:

  • Must haves e.g. extra bedroom and en-suite
  • Would like but not vital e.g. large en-suite and walk-in wardrobe
  • Would be nice but not important e.g. balcony to the bedroom

These objectives could be just a few simple points or a more comprehensively detailed brief, depending on you and your project requirements.

By thinking about these things ahead of your architect consultation, we’ll be able to delve right in to what is driving the project and provide informed advice and guidance.
