Studio J Architects have recently finished a small extension to a residential project in Wakefield. The existing house had a conservatory that was never used due to it being either too hot or too cold. The conservatory also blocked the views of and access to the garden.
The new extension is built on the opposite side of the rear elevation. There is now direct access to a new patio and the garden from newly installed bi-fold doors from the existing dining area.
Although a relatively small extension the living space created has transformed how the home owners use the house. No longer sat in a dark room with no views and having awkward access to the garden. It brings the house into the modern way of living with an open plan kitchen-dining-living room that is light and airy with great connection to the garden.
The existing kitchen was in good condition and so was to be retained. It was therefore important that the design allowed for this. A new opening was created adjacent to the kitchen, with the builders taking care not to cause any damage.
We have made a couple of videos of the project. The first shows how the build has progressed externally, watch here. The second is a short walk around the extension, watch here.
