Modern barn conversions in the Yorkshire countryside
Working on modern barn conversions, to turn them into luxury homes, is something we love to do at Studio J Architects. So working on a cluster of old derelict barns, to turn them into five beautiful residential properties, was great to be involved with!
Our client had purchased an old farm house with a series of barns in various states of disrepair. Many had very little left of the roofs and walls. While some of the barns still retained some great original features.
The brief was to convert them into a number of residential properties. These would be rented out as holiday lets.
Due to the run down nature of the barns. Care needed to be taken to ensure they were suitable to be lived in and inline with all current building standards. While retaining the rustic original features of the barns.
Where the original structure could not be retained, modern materials were used. To highlight the original and new.
For the new elements, standing seam metal was used for the roofs and timber cladding for the walls.
Parts of the original brickwork is exposed internally. With the remaining walls being plastered, where the brickwork was in a poor visual state, for a modern finish.
The finished project has 5 residential units. Ranging from 3 to 5 bedrooms (most with en-suites). Along with open plan kitchen-dining-living rooms and private outside space.
